This afternoon, I took it off the shelf. Maybe because I am grouchy and ornery and feel like I am suffocating in my own life. Maybe because my best good friend of the time gave it to me and I felt like reading what she wrote in it. Maybe, because I feel like on the surface, everything is okay, but on the inside I'm a wreck? Hopefully, I'm not the only person who feels that way. I know my house feels that way, probably my carpets, car, and hot flowers in the front yard. If they could talk they would definitely curse me out for not being a very good house keeper, carpet vacuumer, car owner and gardener.
I really took this book of the shelf to read the list and evaluate my "happiness" here it goes:
- your life has purpose and meaning (um, okay, I'll try to remember that)
- use a strategy for happiness
- you don't have to win every time (I'm good at this one. I know I don't have to win, and I'm not too competitive. Score one for me!)
- your goals should be aligned with one another
- choose your comparisons wisely
- cultivate friendships (I try. Thank you book club girls for talking to me!)
- turn off the TV (piece of cake! The TV is hardly ever on.)
- accept yourself-unconditionally (let's pretend, for now, this one isn't on the list. A bit of a challenge at the moment)
- remember where you came from
- limit yourself to thinking about one subject as you lie down to sleep (I am definitely willing to work on this one.)
- friendship beats money
- have realistic expectations
- be open to new ideas
- share with others how important they are to you (not so good at this. Family, I love you all!)
- if you're not sure, guess positively
- believe in yourself (let's group this one with #8. I know I can cook dinner and take care of the baby, but other than that...let's not think about this for now)
- don't believe in yourself too much (okay!)
- don't face your problems alone
- age is not to be feared (Great! I don't fear age at all. I think getting older is pretty cool, actually. Except my knees hurt.)
- develop a household routine (I need help with this one. How does trying to do everything everyday count as a household routine)
- don't be overprotective (but, I'm the mama bear!)
- pay attention. you may have what you want (yeah, I pretty much do!)
- don't let your religious beliefs fade
- do what you say you are going to do (I do)
- don't be aggressive with you friends and family
- root for the home team (Go Utes! Go Wolverines!)
- don't confuse stuff with success (I've pretty much got this one figured out. Thank you mom for teaching me this important lesson)
- every relationship is different
- don't think "what if"
- volunteer (I need to do more of this)
- if you can't reach your goals, your goals will hurt you
- exercise (huh? Oh yeah, getting outside every once in a while probably isn't a bad idea!)
- little things have big meanings
- it's not what happened, it's how you think about what happened
- develop some common interests with loved ones (I don't want to play fantasy baseball)
- laugh
- don't let your entire life hinge on one element
- share of yourself
- busy is better than bored (once again, thanks mom! The "B" word isn't part of my vocabulary and it won't be part of the little monkey's either)
- satisfaction is relative
- learn to use a computer (Score! I can do this pretty well)
- try to think less about the people and things that bother you (easier said than done. I think that's where this whole blog post is coming from to begin with)
- keep your family close
- eat some fruit every day
- enjoy what you have
- think in concrete terms
- be socially supportive
- don't blame yourself
- be a peacemaker
- cherish animals
- make your work a calling
- never trade your morals for you goals
- don't pretend to ignore things your loved ones do that bother you
- get a good nights sleep
- buy what you like
- accomplish something every day (define "something")
- be flexible
- events are temporary
- be your own fan
- join a group
- be positive
- there will be an end, but you can be prepared
- how we see the world is more important than how the world is
- keep a pen and paper handy (I learned this from watching "blues clues" I always have my handy dandy notebook around!)
- help the next person who needs some minor assistance
- take care not to harshly criticize family and friends
- some people like the big picture and others like the details
- do things you are good at
- go visit your neighbor (I talked to one of my neighbors just last night. She gave me some crystal light)
- smile
- don't accept televisions picture of the world
- you always have a choice
- be agreeable
- don't ignore one part of your life
- listen to music (every day, all day long. My world is on "shuffle")
- let your goals guide you
- use your job positively
- don't forget to have fun
- believe in ultimate justice
- reminisce
- be conscientious
- don't dwell on un-winnable conflicts
- enjoy the ordinary
- focus not on the world's tragedies, but on the world's hope
- get a hobby
- envying other people's relationships is pointless
- give yourself time to adapt to change (this might be at the root of all my issues. How much time does it take to adjust from being "career driven" to "the mama"?)
- focus on what really matters to you
- realize that complete satisfaction does not exist
- surround yourself with pleasant aromas
- don't let others set your goals
- you are a person, not a stereotype
- know what makes you happy and sad
- we must feel needed
- say "so what"
- have a purpose
- you have not finished the best part of your life
- money does not buy happiness
- what does it all mean? you decide.
Maybe I'm not doing so bad after all.
How about the rest of you out there? How does this list work for you?

That's a cool list. There are definitely some things on it for me to work on.
Life is good!
Mammcita
i find the title "100 simple secrets of happy people"....ok if it was really that simple, there wouldn't be 100 of them.
that's my thought.
and no you are not alone. i find that trying to do everything everyday is completely maddening and makes me feel like the biggest failure on the planet. how do you choose between reading to your little kids or folding the laundry??? come on.....it's just a joke to try to do everything everyday all the time and not go insane....
